Arjun Mandal is a 58-year old enthusiastic teacher and a multi-tasker with interests in multiple areas such as farming, playing football and sewing. A few years ago, Arjun suddenly started experiencing difficulties with urination. It took a while for Arjun and his family to understand what his symptoms were pointing towards. Later, his reports showed something he and his family had not thought about, even in their wildest dreams - prostate cancer.
Although his diagnosis with prostate cancer left him shattered initially, the unbending will he developed in the next few days and the trust he had in the medical team at HCG helped him stay positive throughout the treatment and ultimately win over cancer.
It was in 2016 that Arjun started experiencing a frequent urge to urinate, burning sensation and uncontrolled urination. Initially, he and his family members weren’t able to figure out what was wrong; however, when he consulted Dr Aftab Alam Ansari, Senior Radiation Oncologist at HCG Abdur Razzaque Ansari Cancer Hospital, Ranchi, he found that he had high-risk prostate cancer.
At HCG, we believe in delivering the right treatment, the first time. Our multidisciplinary team consists of specialists from various disciplines who together discuss the patient information thoroughly, weigh the pros and cons of each treatment modality and eventually come up with the customised treatment plan for each patient. This not only increases the chances of a successful clinical outcome but also preserves the patient’s quality of life.
In the case of Arjun, Dr Aftab and his team thoroughly evaluated the diagnostic information and recommended a combination of radical radiotherapy and 8 hormonal injections for two years.
Technological advancements in Radiation oncology, in recent years have helped specialists come up with treatment plans that hardly interfere with the patient’s day-to-day activities. This was not any different in Arjun’s case.
Throughout the treatment, Arjun showed immense courage and positivity. A treatment plan that comprised radiotherapy and hormonal injections helped him recover at a faster rate without major complications.
Post-treatment, his PSA levels returned to normal levels. Since then, Arjun has been visiting our centre every 6 months for routine follow-ups. He is now back in school teaching, taking part in his favourite activities and leading a normal and healthy life.
